Note from Andy - I've decided to support this charity as I was quite moved by the plight on an old soldier in Worthing Hospital. A couple of weeks ago I had to take my father to Hospital after our Tuesday dance class. My dad was taken in because he'd recently had an operation and was suffering a lot of pain but he turned out to be OK on this occasion - my dad is ex-RAF and saw combat himself in the Aden conflict in the early 60s I was only a child at the time and didn't really grasp what was going on - thankfully.
While I was getting my dad admitted I overheard the history being taken for man behind the screens in the next bed on the surgical ward. The doctor asked about this man's mobility and walking. The man said he couldn't walk. When asked why he said his legs had been "trapped in the Normandy Landings". I saw this man on the ward the next day and he was a thin and slightly lost looking elderly gentleman in badly fitting pyjamas. In a quiet moment in the hospital I started thinking what life must have been like for this old soldier. He'd been injured as a young soldier some time between D-Day on 6th June 1944 and the end of that month - 68 years ago! That's 68 years suffering with an injury sustained in the defence of our country. Help for Heroes are doing a lot to support our wounded soldiers and I know we can put on a fantastic dance and help our heroes like this unknown solider.
